Wi-Fi or cable? When Ethernet still wins

The router box prints big numbers; on the desk, the video call still drops. The difference between Wi-Fi and Ethernet is more than advertised speed. One is a shared radio environment. The other is a dedicated path on a wire.

Headline speed versus real speed

Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and 7 brought more bandwidth, and at short range they can be plenty for streaming and the web. The box number is still split across devices, walls, neighbors, and interference. A gigabit cable (and 2.5 or 10 gig in many offices) delivers that capacity with far less swing.

If a phone speed test looks great and a work laptop looks weak, check band (2.4 versus 5/6 GHz), distance to the radio, and whether the device stuck to a busy access point — before you blame the ISP.

Latency and stability: where cable shines

For calls, remote desktop, competitive games, and big transfers on the LAN, low delay and fewer dropped packets matter more than peak rate. Cable is usually more predictable. Wi-Fi changes with microwaves, crowded Bluetooth, and people walking through the room.

A good mesh improves coverage, but every wireless hop has a cost. If a device sits on a desk, cable it when you can; keep phones wireless. That simple split often beats buying a more expensive router.

When Wi-Fi is the right choice

Movement, guests, IoT, and spaces where running cable is painful. Newer standards handle interference better, especially if a 6 GHz band is available and old devices are not crowding it. Use a strong password, a separate guest network, and keep the router firmware current. Open Wi-Fi is still a common mistake.

A practical 2026 rule

If it moves, wireless. If it makes money or wrecks your nerves, wire it. Do not mix WAN speed with LAN speed; a cable inside the house will not turn a 50 Mbps line into 500. Find the bottleneck first, then buy hardware.
